When the follicles reach optimal size, a trigger injection is given, and egg retrieval is performed within 36 hours. The egg retrieval procedure usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Patients may opt for no anesthesia or mild monitored anesthesia care. Discomfort is usually minimal, and pain relief medication is available if needed.
Retrieved eggs are immediately frozen for long-term storage and can be thawed when the patient is ready to use them. The number of eggs retrieved depends on the woman’s age and ovarian reserve.
Ideal Timing for Egg Freezing
Egg quality is generally best between the ages of 30 and 35, after which both egg quantity and quality decline. Women over 30 who do not have immediate plans for pregnancy are encouraged to consider egg freezing to preserve their fertility options. Freezing eggs earlier increases the likelihood of a successful pregnancy in the future.

Egg freezing in Hong Kong is a legal and regulated medical service. Only clinics licensed by the Human Reproductive Technology Authority are permitted to provide egg freezing treatments.
